My wife and I own three computers: an older Power Computing PowerCenter running OS 9.1 and LinuxPPC, a Dual USB iBook running both OS 9.1 and OSX, and a Dell OptiPlex with Windows 2000 installed. My setup is probably slightly more complex than the average (ie: non-Arsian) user. I'll cover that opening with a piece of plastic before too long. One design flaw: although pictures on the web don't show it, the main paper tray sticks out the back of the unit three inches, so dirt and dust can get in (although to a lesser degree than the vertical design of the other two printers). The paper exits on the top, or via a separate exit at the back of the printer that allows envelopes and thicker sheets to print straight through.

The software CD offers a choice of eleven languages, and comes with high quality animated video clips showing how to install the drum unit, load the paper, print a test page, connect the printer to the computer and install the drivers.

The printer comes with a full color poster illustrating the setup steps, with clear instructions for both Macintosh and Windows. Apart from the time I spent running down to the local store to buy a USB cable, which isn't included with the printer, the whole task took no more than 10 minutes. Attach the USB cable, install the driver from the included CD (which was current, nice) and you're good to go. Unpack the printer, plug in the power cord, install the toner cartridge and print a self-test page. The Lexmark may actually be a more versatile printer: although not advertised, the 312L offers Postscript compatibility. (Brother sells a 6k page replacement cartridge.) The Lexmark also comes with 3K, but the Samsung's 'starter' cartridge is rated for only 1k pages. First page spits out in around 15 seconds after you hit the print button. I haven't timed it, but suffice it to say that the Brother is fast enough for day-to-day work. Of course, these are the manufacturers' estimates, so actual speed will usually be slower. the Samsung (12 PPM) and the Lexmark (10 PPM). * Higher rated pages per minute output (15 PPM) vs. The Samsung is limited to the 8 MB that comes with the printer. The Lexmark is expandable from 2 MB to 66 MB, but for the type of work I do 34 should be much more than sufficient. The Lexmark PPD is built into the OSX Print Center. OTOH, Lexmark uses a PPD that plugs into Apple's LaserWriter 8 driver, which I prefer.
